roofers will try to sell you a product because its cheaper
to buy and that will allow them to make more money.
If
I'm ask what shingle I prefer my answer would be Certainteed,
The reason I recommend this brand is for a couple of
reasons.
:-
When installing Certainteeds 30 year Architect Shingles
Certainteed has a wider nailing pattern. If for some
reason a roofer places a nail high this shingle allows that
nail to still catch both the top and bottom shingle and that
means you are getting 8 nails per shingle. This is very very
useful if you have a steeper pitch roof.

Certainteed offers a 30 year 3-tab shingle, along with 20
and 25 year.
I
don't really know of any bad shingles, however I know that
you
can buy a Good Shingle, A better Shingle and the best
shingle. With anything you buy, the better the product
becomes the more it will cost.
I
do not install Owens Corning shingles because of there warranty
problems. If you have a roofer to install this brand and 1
bundle of those shingles are from a different lot number
Owens Corning will not repair it, they intern pass the
problem on to the supplier or the contractor. Other Companies
stand behind there product.
Another
Problem I have found with Owens Corning is a homeowner
bought some shingles because she caught them on sale, she
waited to have them installed and between the time she
bought them and the time she was ready to install the
shingle sealant that holds the shingles together after they
are installed was no longer on the shingle, when she called Owens
corning they told her nothing they could do. My thought was
weather its on your roof or still in the sealed package it
was shipped in and also wrapped in 16ml plastic the warranty
should still be in effect.
